A Study of Mothers¡¯ Need of Parent Education for Safe Child Care

Abstract
This study was devised to investigate where young children¡¯s mothers sought for the information and received support for safe child care, what methods and contents of parent education they preferred on young children¡¯s safety, and whether or no the differences were found in their need for parent education on young children¡¯s safety according to their young children¡¯s age. Also this study was to analyze the experience of their participation in parent education program on young children¡¯s safety and the effect of it. The conclusion of this study was as follows: 1. The sources of information useful in safe child care included family(69£¥), books (64£¥), friends or relatives(54£¥), public facilities for safety(52£¥), teachers(39£¥), internet sites(11£¥), television programs(9£¥), and newspapers(8£¥). Conversation with friends or . family(79£¥), conversation with other parents(72£¥). reading books or newspapers(64£¥). participation in safety education program(48£¥), and watching other parents¡¯ behaviors (45£¥) were the main sources of support for safe child care. 2. Mothers recognized the need of parent education on young children¡¯s safety, especially requiring education about the play safety. The preferred methods of parent education on young children¡¯s safety were activities or learning by experience(92£¥), reading(90£¥), discussion(87£¥), and lecture(65£¥). 3. The degree of the mothers¡¯ need with children between 24 and 36 months was higher than that with children under 24 months in play safety and fire-related safety, and with children over 36 months higher than that with children under 24 months in motor vehicle safety. 4. 31£¥ mothers had expericence in participating in parent education program on young children¡¯s safety last year and 76.4£¥ of them thought it helpful for safe child care in the practical life.
